Summary Not Bad
Review

Good location near VT.  Ensure your taxi driver doesn’t take you to the Residency which is just around the corner and more expensive. The standard rooms are tiny – bed against the wall not really suitable for two people. The standard deluxe rooms are excellent – decent amount of room and slightly higher standard.

No restaurant but a free basic buffet breakfast served on the second floor landing.

Summary Not Bad
Review

On the main road and no actual sea views, but not a bad hotel provided you negotiate the room rate down quite significantly from what is on the internet. None A/C rooms at the top of the old block are quite small.

There is a charge for wi-fi.

Summary Nice little hotel
Review

Quiet location on the beach road. Nice little hotel with rooms set around a garden. TV in all rooms but ours didn’t receive any channels. Room could have done with a mosquito net and somewhere to hang clothes.

Free but flaky wi-fi.

A/C Beach Room. Isolated location, best if the hotel sends a tuk-tuk to pick you up from the station. Adequate rooms, set meals provided at extra cost.

Summary Excellent B&B. Well located.
Review

Excellent little B&B in quiet location but convenient for restaurants and the nets. Directions (as it isn’t that easy to find) – Take Bernard Masters Road from the roundabout and then take the very first alleyway on the left. The guest house is quite a way down on the right.

Jaicy & Joy were very helpful hosts and cooked some of the best south Indian breakfasts we have had.

The rooms are spacious and clean. It was only the lack of hot water in one of the rooms that prevented an excellent rating.

Summary Clean and well appointed.
Review

A short walk from the south end of the north cliff and the restaurants and shops (behind the Tibetan market). Opposite a bar (The Chill Out Lounge) live music at weekends that can be quite loud and go on until late.

Rooms well appointed and decorated, clean, satellite TV. Could do with more comfortable chairs.

No wi-fi although fair reception from local bars even on the top floor.

Summary Dirty and overpriced.
Review

We booked what we thought would be a bit of luxury for the Christmas and new year period,
but when we arrived we were shown a tiny room with the double bed pushed up against one wall and very little room to walk around the rest of it. There was a ceiling fan but no TV. We asked to see something better and were shown a much larger room with a double and single bed, but it was filthy.

We decided to cancel our full booking, spend one night there and look for something better the next day – as it happened we found something an order of magnitude better and for slightly less money within a couple of hours.

The edited highlights from our list;

    1. The guest kitchen facilities mentioned on their website turned out to be a large area on the roof filled with used tins and dirty cooking utensils. I think this was used by the owners to cook the included breakfast as they showed alarm when we asked if we could have a look at it.
    2. No top sheet, towels, soap or toilet paper provided. This is normal for a cheap budget hotel but considering the rate we were paying this was unacceptable.
    3. The floor needed a good clean. OK the hotel is a few yards away from the beach so sand on the floor is to be expected but not after it has been supposedly cleaned ready for new guests.
    4. The room was lit by one low energy light bulb. All other light fittings either didn’t contain a bulb or the bulb didn’t work. When we pointed this out the manager fitted a fluorescent tube where one was missing.
    5. The curtains were covered with insect eggs.
    6. There was a TV but the power socket it was plugged into didn’t work.
    7. There were several air vents around the top of the room – none of these were covered with insect netting. Needless to say we woke up the next morning with a few bites.
    8. The toilet cistern leaked so the bathroom floor was always wet.
    9. The bathroom was filthy and the toilet was in dire need of some bleach and a good brushing.
    10. The hot water heater for the shower didn’t have a plug – its wires were simply pushed into the socket!

For £20 per night this was a terrible hotel. Perhaps if we had been paying under £5 per night we would have put up with it.

We discussed the misleading information on the hotel web site with the manager who blamed the previous owner and said that he needed to find a good lawyer and gain access to the site and update it.

I don’t know what he would update it to say that would justify a £20 price tag, in my opinion the entire hotel needs a good clean, some considerable renovation and a change of management.

Summary Could do with a good clean.
Review Hotel in a very good location for the temple but could do with a good clean and cleaner bed linen. Our room was also occupied by quite a few cockroaches – mostly in the bathroom but some in the bedroom.

We had to ask for top sheets which were not very clean at all.

PS. The room we had had some strange marks on the ceiling. It was only when we turned out the lights at night that they reveal themselves to be stars, planets and rockets painted in luminescent paint – very odd but quite nice in a way.

PPS. No remote control for the TV so couldn’t get it to work. Didn’t bother chasing this problem although I’m sure if we had the hotel would have sorted it.

Summary Nice hotel shame about the staff.
Review

A well appointed hotel, relatively large and modern rooms with multi channel TV (some in English), hot water and ceiling fan. It is a shame that the staff weren’t more helpful. We booked one night but decided to extend our stay by two more nights – not a problem but we would have to upgrade to an a/c room as our non a/c room was booked for our second night. We could either pay the difference and move immediately or move the next day – so far so good.

But we couldn’t move until after 11:00 the next day – their official checkout time, even though the room wasn’t occupied. As we were leaving on a day trip at 09:00ish this wasn’t very helpful. Also due to a three day festival their restaurant was closed. We asked for recommended alternatives and they pointed us to a local but not very good restaurant around the corner.

They omitted to tell us about a much better restaurant just across the road – perhaps because it was part of another competing hotel.

In the end we moved to the competing hotel simply because they were much more helpful.

Bedding adequate although you have to ask for a top sheet and all of the bedding was too small for the bed. The sheets could have done with being a little cleaner.

The room we had was also occupied by a colony of ants.

Some street noise although that is why you should travel with a good set of earplugs.

Note: The hotel web site states that it has wi-fi, it does but it doesn’t work and reading some of the other reviews on Tripadvisor it sounds like it hasn’t worked for some time. The manager said it would be fixed in three days or so.

Summary Small rooms but nice hotel.
Review

Booked an a/c room with multi channel TV, ceiling fan, hot water and mini fridge. Wi-fi only in reception area. Rooms insect free and clean. Bedding clean and well fitting. Rooms on the small side but quite adequate – two of us had to spend an entire day in the room due to illness but this wasn’t a problem.

The hotel has a restaurant in the basement next to the underground car park – this is a little odd but the food is fair to good although the table linen could do with a wash. Probably the best restaurant in the immediate area.

Summary Nice Place
Review

A typical business hotel, rooms a little on the small side but clean and very well located for the railway station. Hot water, some English language TV channels, good WiFi.

Evening and breakfast buffets very good value and very nice, although ordering a la carte not recommended – depends if the chef cooks it or some other memeber of staff.

Highly Recommended.

Summary Overpriced
Review

A bit out of the way and difficult to find (make sure you have their telephone number with you when trying to find the place). Slightly overpriced for what you get – we booked a small apartment but with no cooking facilities/kitchen.

Not the best location in Candolim although only a short walk to the beach or to the main street and shops.

Summary Perfectly located, stunning interior, highly recommended.
Review

Ideally located for St Thomas Mount and relatively close to the airport. The house is probably colonial era and may have been an officer’s house. Inside it is decorated in what is best described as eclectic art nouveau. The rooms are very clean and quite well appointed – 1 or 2 English language TV channels, H&C water and A/C.

Breakfast is served in a communal dining area where coffee and tea is available all the time. There is also a communal fridge (Note: Best to label anything you put in the fridge with name and room no.).

The owner (Mr George) will order other meals for you (selected from the five or more menus in your room) and deliver them to you in the dining room.

Very highly recommended. Very helpful and very nice owner. A Pleasant stay.

Summary Slightly overpriced for what it is.
Review

We booked a room with en-suite and a/c for Rs14,000 – generally clean but slightly worn, probably more in the Rs8,000 to 10,000 range. Shared kitchen available for simple meals although don’t expect to cook too much as the facilities are limited and utensils well worn. The main problem with Khushi is the noise level. The families that live downstairs like to shout a lot and all rooms open onto a shared dining room/common room so there can be a lot of noise generated by other guests.

After what looks like a generally negative review I would still recommend this guest house, the owners are very nice and helpful and it is well located for the southern end of the ghats

WiFi worked well in our room although other guests did appear to have to sit very near to the router (in the common room) to get a good signal.

Our room had a TV which we weren’t able to get to work.

Summary Not a bad hotel
Review Clean and small rooms. Nice bathroom and shower. Wifi good, TV has a few English channels.

Restaurant very good as is room service. All slightly spoilt by the several requests for tips by room service (may only have been one individual). Also house keeping would phone every evening to check that you didn’t need anything – we thought this was a nice touch although some may consider it intrusive.

Recommended.
